    Coaching children and young people

In today’s world it is becoming increasingly important to place emphasis on helping our children and young people develop self-awareness and essential life skills, in order for them to acquire coping mechanisms to live balanced and fulfilled lives. Coaches are in a unique position to utilize coaching skills and techniques in order to support children and young people to develop the tools, skills, emotional and mental resilience to navigate life and understand themselves better. The purpose of the advanced training workshop of Coaching Children and Young People is to provide participants with the foundation, skillset, and practical experience to be able to confidently coach children and young people.

The Coaching Children and Young people workshop is a 16 hour experiential training workshop delivered in four sessions of 4 hours each. It is an ideal training workshop for those looking to develop their skills to work with this niche, using a coaching approach. The course will be facilitated in English online using the zoom platform.

During the workshop participants will be introduced to the Coaching Children and Young People Model, the Coaching Process, alongside tools and techniques to support the process. All resources and materials covered in the workshop have been created and developed by Rachel Suery.

    1)    The Coaching Children and Young People Model– the model is grounded in the key foundations and skill set that is needed to coach children and young people and is central to the coaching relationship. Participants will learn the 3 key central elements of the model that underpin the coaching relationship and are fundamental to effectively and successfully engage and coach this niche. These 3 elements include:

    • The well-being dimensions of the “whole child”
    • The fundamental foundations that underpin the coaching relationship
    • Core skills and attributes needed to effectively engage and coach a child or young person.

    2)    The Coaching Process– The stages of the coaching process will be unpacked, helping participants learn and explore best practices and procedures for coaching this niche. The coaching process is designed to guide the coach through the stages of the coaching relationship from start to finish. Throughout the training, participants will work through the process and be given the opportunity to observe demonstrations alongside practising each of the following stages of the process.

    1. a) Creating the Coaching Engagement: Creating the engagement is a collaborative process and involves not only the child or young person, but also the parents/caregiver. Here participants will learn that creating the engagement is pivotal to the coaching process. It is from this space of collaboration that lines of communication are opened, rapport is built and the initial coaching relationship established. During this part of the process participants will learn different models of engagement, what it is important to focus on, and how to develop the initial coaching relationship.
    2. b) The Self- Exploration Process: Often called the “discovery session” in the world of coaching, the self-exploration process provides the space for the coach to build a solid grounding for the coaching relationship. Participants will learn how to take a child or young person through the self- exploration process, along with having the chance to learn and practice specific self- exploration tools that can be used with this niche.
    3. c) Establishing Goals– Establishing priorities and goals helps children and young people to stay focused by shifting from abstract thinking surrounding their current situation, to concrete goals that are relevant and attainable. Participants will learn and practise how to guide children and young people to identify and establish goals for coaching, using a process of creating POWER goals.
    4. d) The Tool Kit- The practical nature of coaching lends itself to using a variety of experiential tools and techniques that support the child and young person to move forward. Participants will learn practical and hands-on tools. There will be the chance to observe demonstrations alongside practising a range of tools with a variety of situations and scenarios. Each tool has been originally created and developed to accommodate different age levels. Participants will come away with a tangible toolkit that is unique and original and can be used immediately with this niche.
    5. e) Action Plan and Follow Up– Keeping track of what is covered during coaching sessions helps to consolidate learning and to decide on next steps to put in place. Participants will learn how to utilize specifically created tools to guide this process collaboratively with the child or young person.

By the end of the workshop participants will have the knowledge, understanding and practical application to be able to confidently coach children and young people. Opportunities will have been provided to observe and practise a variety of coaching tools and resources designed specifically for children and young people.
