Presence and Leadership

Presencia y Liderazgo

“You are what you practice… and you are always practicing something.”
Richard Strozzi

The essence of leadership lies in our ability to choose where we put our focus . This ability, which at first seems to be something we all have – or practice – innately, has the particularity of drawing the complete picture of our life, painting everything it contains: relationships, professional development, life choices.

Therefore, beyond having the skills and competencies necessary to develop our purposes, our leadership will depend on whether we train that capacity and are able to exercise it intentionally and consciously.

The first module of the Somatic Leadership program (Leadership in Action One) is essentially about that, about training our awareness about where we put our focus at each moment and feeling how our body and the shape of our body, our “Soma”, are a fundamental part of that process.

We are what we practice and we are always practicing something . Observing what we practice is a good way to discover who we are. To what extent our actions are aligned with our objectives, whether vital or professional, is something we will have to assess based on whether the “conditions of satisfaction” in accordance with our purpose are being met.
In the Somatic Leadership program we decide and declare our purpose (thought and action). We observe the nature of our responses and the conditioned tendencies that our body registers in response to the stimuli or challenges of our environment. And we do this by feeling how this response is built within us. If there is rigidity or rhythm, if there is tension. If some part of our “Soma” collapses or is not sufficiently present and what form all this ends up giving us.

If we have the presence and impact we desire, the quality relationships we want, or the well-being we need, it is because of the decisions we make and the actions we take. There is an “embodied” history recorded in the “implicit memory” of our body that determines our actions and our presence, and that is where somatic work comes in. Somatic transformation consists precisely of that, of making new actions available to be executed by us, even under pressure.

The bodily experience behind our “Yes” or “No” during our “spoken acts.” What we include and what we exclude when making or receiving requests… What we decide to face and what we decide to ignore, for example, are basic acts of leadership that build our “Soma,” determine our presence, and decisively impact others and the fulfillment of our purpose.

Through Somatic work it is possible to rewrite implicit memory, that which is recorded in our body, so that our presence explains the story that we need to tell others and tell ourselves to achieve this.
