The Power of Listening in Leadership: Why Feeling Heard Improves Team Performance

The Power of Listening in Leadership: Why Feeling Heard Improves Team Performance

Deep listening not only improves communication: it also strengthens trust and enhances people’s ability to find their own answers.

How many times have you interrupted someone to finish the sentence or offered a solution before the other person finished explaining what was happening to them?

We do it more often than we think: in meetings, feedback sessions, daily conversations… And yet, one of the most powerful skills to accompany, lead or promote the development of other people has nothing to do with communicating better, but with listening better.

Because when someone really feels heard, something different happens: the need to justify their position is reduced, thoughts are ordered more clearly and information appears that perhaps they did not even know they had available.

In this excerpt from our Green Talks, Sergio Blancafort, Managing Partner of Gren Light GO and Faculty Leader of Co-Active Training Institute (CTI), shares why listening is the central element of Professional Coaching.

Most of us think we are listening, but in reality we are usually doing something else: preparing our response, comparing what we are told with our own experience, interpreting, judging or looking for a solution.

And while that happens, we are no longer present.

The consequence is that the other person perceives that they are not being fully listened to. Not because there is bad intention, but because our attention is already elsewhere.

The three levels of listening

In Co-Active Coaching we talk about three levels of listening:

  • Level 1: Internal Listening: While the other person is talking, your attention is not focused on what they are saying, but on your own thoughts, feelings, and interpretations.
  • Level 2: Other-centered listening: All your attention is on the person in front of you. You listen to their words with precise focus, without distractions or judgment.
  • Level 3: Global Listening: You listen to the other person, but you are also attentive to everything that is happening around you: non-verbal language, tone of voice, pauses… connecting with the whole person. It is from this level of listening that the most significant discoveries usually emerge.

Why this skill is so important for leaders and managers

One of the most important responsibilities of a leader is to create the conditions for other people to find their own answers. As Sergio explains in the interview, when a person feels really heard, the message changes: what seemed like a complaint can reveal an unexpressed need, or what seemed like a block can be transformed into a new possibility. When a leader listens deeply:

  • Increases team autonomy and reduces reliance on decision-making
  • Strengthens trust and promotes greater individual and collective responsibility
  • Improves understanding of each team member’s motivations and needs
  • Is able to identify tensions and conflicts before they escalate
  • Elevate the quality of conversations, improving collaboration and outcomes

That’s why listening isn’t a passive skill. It is one of the most transformative skills for coaches, leaders, HR professionals and any professional who accompanies people, teams and organizations in development processes.

Listening is also trained

In Fundamentals, the first module of CTI’s Co-Active Coaching program, participants train emotional skills and competencies such as:

  • Listen at different levels
  • Self-management and observation without judgment
  • Curiosity and powerful, thought-provoking questions
  • Feedback, support and recognition to promote people’s development

Today, more than 150,000 professionals in more than 120 countries have been trained in Co-Active Coaching, a program accredited by the International Coaching Federation and recognized by the Harvard Institute of Coaching as an international reference standard for coach training.
