Our way of being is the result of everything we have experienced since the day the first cell in our body began to divide, inside the mother’s womb. Saying this is not saying a little, but it is still not saying enough. In reality, we are also conditioned by the history of our parents , the host society into which we integrate or even the position that our family occupies or has occupied in it. Thus, from the moment we begin to perceive our environment, if not before, we incorporate certain predispositions, perspectives, beliefs or conditioned response patterns .
We internally process what happens in our ecosystem as if we were already reading, from the first stages of our life, a roadmap for what is to come. An “instruction book” to which our own personal experience, the course of our life and the result of our decisions or actions will add pages. These instructions on how to live that we have incorporated osmotically, by imitation or “modeling,” and of which we are not even aware, sometimes constitute blind spots that determine our current “way of being” much more than reasoning, thoughts or good intentions. That is why, sometimes, we have the feeling that we are not who we would like to be, without actually being aware of who we are, of our “blind spots.”
Our way of being is not a starting point, but a result . A changing result, although the speed of change is proportional to the time lived in the current way of being. That is, if you have been under the influence of a certain pattern of response or belief for a long time, you will also need time to change its effect on your decisions and actions . For example: If you have learned to say YES when you would or should say NO, because a chapter of that implicit “instruction manual” indicates that saying YES is your move towards safety, It may take you some time to discover that your IS is the reason why you often find yourself caught up in situations that are beyond you or involved in problems that do not really concern you. And it is possible that, until the moment in which you discover that, in your “instruction book”, your way of moving towards security is to say YES, you explain what happens to you in various ways that range from self-blame: “I am weak”, “I always get into trouble”, to blaming others: “you can’t be good”, “people are very self-interested”, “they only like me when it suits them”, developing narratives that will act as a powerful disguise and condition your capacity to respond, inhibiting your possibility of change.
In my opinion, one of the great contributions of somatic methodology, applied to the development of personality, leadership or trauma healing, is precisely that, to reveal our current way of being, to better understand our blind spots and discover how this somatized form of being is housed in the body that we are, at the tissue and nervous system level, beyond the cognitive level of consciousness. This holistic concept of transforming form to give rise to new content is one of the most reliable practices when it comes to developing optimized ways of manifesting our essence.
